The African continent is mourning the passing of former Nigerian President, General Muhammadu Buhari (Rtd), who died on Sunday at the age of 82. From regional blocs to heads of government, tributes have continued to pour in, honoring his legacy as a firm, principled, and disciplined leader who left an indelible mark on Nigeria and Africa at large.
General Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s military head of state from 1983 to 1985 and as democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023, was widely respected for his tough anti-corruption stance, deep patriotism, and commitment to regional security.
African Union Commission Chairperson, Moussa Faki Mahamat, described Buhari as “a fearless statesman whose integrity and voice shaped many of Africa’s positions on key global issues.” South African President Cyril Ramaphosa called him “a symbol of resilience and accountability.” Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo praised his role in strengthening ECOWAS, while Kenya’s President William Ruto hailed him as “a continental leader whose wisdom and firmness were always admired.”
In Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu declared a national mourning period, describing Buhari as “a true patriot whose sacrifice and selfless leadership will continue to inspire generations.” He also directed that national flags be flown at half-mast across the country.
Governor Dikko Umaru Radda of Katsina State announced that the late president will be buried in his hometown, Daura, in Katsina State. The remains of General Buhari will depart London at 6:00 a.m. tomorrow and are expected to arrive in Katsina by 12:00 noon. Burial rites will be conducted in line with Islamic tradition, with dignitaries, family members, and well-wishers expected to attend.
Condolence registers have been opened in government institutions and Nigerian missions around the world as the nation mourns the loss of a leader who shaped its destiny through decades of service.
General Muhammadu Buhari is survived by his wife, Aisha Buhari, his children, grandchildren, and a legacy that will forever live in the hearts of Nigerians and Africans.
May Almighty Allah forgive his shortcomings and grant him eternal rest in Aljannatul Firdaus.
