FG Launches $40M ICT Blueprint to Digitise 10 Nigerian Universities

By Mikailu Abubakar Abuja, Nigeria — In a historic move to modernize Nigeria's education sector, the Federal Government has launched a $40 million ICT blueprint project aimed at digitising 10 public universities across the country. The initiative is designed to strengthen digital infrastructure, promote e-learning, and enhance research capacity within tertiary institutions.


The official unveiling took place in Abuja, with key government officials, education sector stakeholders, foreign partners, and university representatives in attendance. The Minister of Education hailed the project as a transformative step toward building globally competitive Nigerian universities that align with 21st-century digital realities.


The project, which is being implemented in collaboration with international development partners and ICT firms, will include the provision of high-speed internet, smart classrooms, digital labs, and capacity building for staff and students. It also includes plans for national cloud storage systems and security protocols to protect institutional data.


Beneficiary Institutions


The following ten universities are set to benefit from the first phase of this ambitious digital upgrade:


1. University of Lagos (UNILAG), Lagos State


2. Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, Kaduna State


3. University of Nigeria (UNN), Nsukka, Enugu State


4. Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State


5. University of Ibadan (UI), Oyo State


6. Federal University of Technology, Minna (FUTMinna), Niger State


7. Bayero University, Kano (BUK), Kano State


8. University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID), Borno State


9. University of Benin (UNIBEN), Edo State


10. Federal University, Otuoke (FUO), Bayelsa State


Each of these institutions will receive a tailored digital infrastructure deployment plan, based on individual campus needs and student population.


Government's Commitment to ICT-Driven Learning


Speaking at the event, the Minister emphasized that the $40 million investment marks only the beginning, with more institutions expected to join future phases. He urged university administrators to ensure sustainability by maintaining the infrastructure and expanding digital literacy.


This initiative aligns with Nigeria’s National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy (2020-2030), aimed at making the country a leader in Africa’s knowledge-based economic
